Guided Tours

One of the most common things people say to me when they meet me is

“Gosh, I wish you’d been my history teacher at school!”

It’s very flattering and it set me thinking…. why not be your history teacher just for the day?

Throughout the year, subject to availability, you can book me to take you on a personally guided, tailor-made history tour…. a sort of school history trip for those of us who missed out when we were younger!

If you’ve ever wandered aimlessly around an historic site and wondered bitterly why your kids/wife/great-aunt Josephine only ever ask questions you don’t know the answers to?!!…. who was more important a prior or an abbot? What’s the difference between a Jacobite and a Jacobean and would either of them have offered so much as a bacon buttie to a Jacobin? How did a medieval castle work and  who actually lived in them? Why did the Normans build so many cathedrals? What sort of people lived in monasteries and nunneries? If you’ve ever wished you’d known the answer to any of these questions then this is very definitely a tour for you!

The tours usually begin with a chat over morning coffee and then take in a church or a castle a monastery or even a cathedral before pottering off for lunch. If the weather’s not being absolutely appalling we’ve even been known to picnic instead. After lunch I’ll take you to discover more of the history that’s hidden away in some of our grand and sometimes not so grand country houses where we often contrive to end the day with a refreshing and reviving cream tea!

A guided tour usually starts about 10am. and lasts between seven and eight hours.

The cost of a full day tour within Norfolk is £160.00. for up to four people providing their own transport and meals. For larger parties or groups such as history societies, school archaeology clubs, Women’s Institutes and so on rates are available on request.

I also plan and lead tours throughout the UK so if you’re intrigued by the pre-historic monuments of the Marlborough Downs, fascinated by the Early Christian Crosses of the Argyll Peninsula or you’ve always longed to explore the remote, painted churches of North Wales then please email me to discuss terms and conditions.
